History of the CSM Nursing Program
In response to a survey of hospitals, schools, health officials, and other agencies,
the Associate Degree Nursing Program was initiated in the Fall of 1963 to meet the
need for registered nurses in the community. The first class graduated in 1965 shortly
after the new CSM campus on the hill was opened. Each year the growing number of alumni
maintains the fine reputation and high standards of the nursing program.
The Associate Degree Nursing Program includes theory on campus and clinical nursing
experience in local hospitals. The curriculum is updated to meet the changing needs
of the health care environment. Students receive content and clinical experience in
all areas required by the California Board of Registered Nursing. These include assignments
in Adult Medical-Surgical nursing, Maternity and Pediatric nursing, Psychiatric nursing,
and Gerontologic nursing. Students also have community based experiences to give them
a comprehensive understanding of the health care needs of the community. The graduates
are eligible to take the State Board exam to become an registered nurse (RN).
Nursing faculty members are innovative and caring as they work with students on an
individual basis to help them achieve their goal of completion of the program. Their
creative instructional methods have been well received by the students and prepare
them for the critical thinking required for nursing in today's health care settings.
The future holds great promise for graduates, many of whom are employed in health
care agencies throughout the Bay Area. With the high demand for registered nurses
in all areas of health care, CSM graduates are successful in finding varied nursing
employment opportunities, including returning as nursing faculty! If you are interested
