Frequently Asked Questions
How does the acceptance process work?
Visit Nursing - How to Apply or the Merit Based Criteria Handout - Fall 2025 Admission to learn more about our step-by-step process.
How much can a student expect to work and still be successful?
Each student must decide how much time to budget for work. Generally speaking,
full-time employment is not recommended.
What is the cost of the program, including fees, books, and supplies?
Depending on financial aid status, approximately $5,000 for the 1st year (including
tuition, books and required supplies) and $2,500 for the 2nd year.
How long should it take to complete an A.S. in Nursing degree?
A student should plan to spend at least 2 years completing prerequisite courses
plus 2 additional years after acceptance into the nursing program.
What are the requirements for the A.S. in Nursing degree?
The student should consult the College of San Mateo catalog or contact Counseling Services.
If I took courses in another country, how do I obtain credit for them?
CSM requires a detailed evaluation from an approved transcript evaluation service:
- SpanTran Application – San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCD students receive discounted rate)
- World Education Services
- International Education Research Foundation, Inc.
Any courses taken in another country must go through this special international evaluation
before you can begin the process of course substitution. See Step 5 in Nursing - How to Apply or the Merit Based Criteria Handout- Fall 2025 Admission.
Where should I go if I have questions about prerequisite courses?
The nursing department can answer general questions about prerequisite courses:
650-574-6218. We are located in building 5-361 (when campus is OPEN). If you need
Counseling Services, please call 650-574-6400 or visit building 10-340. You are required to have a student
ID (G#) to make an appointment. See Step 2 in Nursing - How to Apply.
I am currently attending a nursing school and want to relocate. What are my options?
We do not accept previous coursework from other nursing programs and the advanced
placement policy is only reserved for current Licensed Vocational Nurses or prior
Military Technician / Medical Specialists (based on space availability).
According to the BRN, I need to take only one section to get my license in California.
Do you offer certain sections?
Unfortunately, due to clinical constraints, the program does not offer sections
required for license by the BRN for foreign RNs.
What is your success rate?
Check out the BRN website at NCLEX-RN Pass Rates - First Time CA Educated Exam Testers.
Do you offer financial aid?
There are scholarships available for students in the program. Visit CSM Scholarships or contact the Financial Aid office for more information.
How many applications were received each year?
Information concerning applications is considered confidential.
What are the hours and days for the nursing program?
Nursing theory classes and skills lab hours vary. There are some clinical lab
sections offered in the evening hours or the weekends. As a result, you may need to
change your work schedule each semester.
Can I take the program part-time or online?
No, the CSM nursing program is full-time and in-person only.
I'm still in high school. What are my options?
See your guidance counselor. You still need to complete the prerequisites.
I took prerequisites 10 years ago. Do I need to take them again?
There is no expiration date on prerequisite courses taken EXCEPT the biology courses:
BIOL 240, 250, 260 and CHEM 210 or 410 which must be completed within the last 5 years.
