Alex Guiriba
Vice President of Student Services Candidate
Alex Guiriba (he/him/siya) serves as the Interim Vice President of Student Services at College of San Mateo (CSM). The son of Filipinx immigrants, Alex grew up in San Mateo County where he attended public schools and CSM. He is a spouse to Kealani and parent to Lilinoe and Hanalei. With nearly two decades of student-centered equity experience, Alex began his career at CSM in 2006 and worked in staff, faculty, and management roles. He established CSM’s Student Ambassador Program, Connect to College, and co-founded the Katipunan Filipinx Learning Community.
At City College of San Francisco, he served as a Dean in Student Affairs during the accreditation, budget, and enrollment crisis at the college and supported the Free City College initiative. Areas of responsibility for Alex included supervising staff and faculty, overseeing outreach, student life, and resource centers for Undocumented, LGBTQIA+, and Veteran students. There he developed a strong collaboration with community and school partners and between student services and academic affairs. Under his leadership, enrollment of SFUSD students increased 39%.
Alex leads the Student Services Division as Interim VPSS at CSM, is an accreditation tri-chair, and college lead for Vision Aligned Reporting. Alex has provided stability and growth for CSM. He helped build and grow the Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution and Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander efforts supporting existing and emerging programs. Alex has been active in participatory governance spaces and overseen large budgets. He is a member of the Chief Student Services Officers Association, Association of California Community College Administrators, and President of the Filipinx Community College Collaborative.
He holds an AA from CSM, a BA from the UC Berkeley, an MA from SJSU, and is a scholar practitioner in SFSU’s Educational Leadership Doctoral Program centered in equity and social justice. Alex enjoys time with family, golf, and rooting on Bay Area sports teams. He has a deep love, passion, and commitment for CSM, the community, and its mission, vision, and values. Alex is honored for this full-circle opportunity to serve as CSM’s first alumni and Filipinx Vice President of Student Services.
