Faculty Flex Day Obligations

Flex Day Annual Calendar

SMCCD provides a flexible calendar for staff development in accordance with California Code of Regulations, Title 5, Division 6, § 55724*. There are six (6) Flex Days in the 2023-2024 academic calendar:

• Monday and Tuesday, August 14 and 15, 2023, and Wednesday, October 11, 2023.
• Thursday and Friday, January 11 and 12, 2024, and Thursday, April 18, 2024.

SMCCD requires mandatory attendance at two Flex Days (Tuesday, August 15, 2023, and Friday, January 12, 2024), while the other four Flex Days remain on "flexible time."

Full-Time Faculty Flex Day Obligations

All SMCCD full-time faculty members have a total of 6 days (30 hours) of Flex obligations to complete. SMCCD requires mandatory attendance at two Flex Days (Tuesday, August 15, 2023, and Friday, January 12, 2024), while the other four Flex Days remain on "flexible time." Failure to fulfill this obligation may result in a reduction of pay.

If you are a faculty member unable to participate in any of the planned on-campus Flex Day activities and would like to know about alternatives available to you, discuss your situation and options with your Division Dean.

Hourly (Adjunct and Retired) Faculty Flex Day Obligations & Compensation

SMCCD hourly (adjunct and retired) faculty flex obligations vary based on semester assignment. Failure to fulfill this obligation may result in a reduction of pay.

If you are scheduled to teach on the same day of the week that a Flex Day occurs, you can receive compensation for reported flex activities up to the total number of hours normally worked on that day(s) up to 5 hours. Beyond those hours (or if you are not scheduled to teach on the day of the week Flex Day occurs) you can receive compensation at the special rate, for up to 5 hours per Flex Day.
