Welcome and Keynote Speaker: Dr. Gina Garcia, Defining Servingness and Advancing Racial Justice at Hispanic Serving Institutions

After a welcome from President Pérez, we will hear from our keynote speaker, Dr. Gina Garcia. In this talk Dr. Garcia discusses her book Hispanic Serving Institutions in Practice: Defining “Servingness” at HSIs. She lays out the Multidimensional Conceptual Framework for Understanding “Servingness,” and talks about the “structures for serving” and gives examples of how HSIs are transforming their structures in practice.

 

Additionally, Dr. Garcia argues that in order for HSIs to effectively transform towards a mission of racial equity and social justice, there must be an intentional effort to acknowledge, address, and reconcile the ways that systemic racism lives within postsecondary institutions.

 

She highlights the ways that whiteness manifests in colleges and universities, drawing from empirical examples within the HSI context, and explores ways to disrupt the factors that reproduce inequities in outcomes and experiences for people of color. Dr. Garcia challenges audience members to think about how racism and microaggressions are indicators that institutions are not adequately serving people of color.

All-Campus Workshop with Dr. Gina Garcia: Becoming Hispanic-Serving Institutions

Participants will engage with ideas from the book Becoming Hispanic Serving Institutions: Opportunities for Colleges and Universities. The training is hands on, beginning with a look at the Typology of HSI Organizational Identities and guided by prompts to help participants determine the type of HSI their institution currently is: Latinx-enrolling, Latinx-producing, Latinx-enhancing, or Latinx-serving, and the type it wants to become. Dr. Garcia provides tangible ways for faculty to rethink their classroom practices, staff to elevate support services that center students’ intersectional identities, and administrators to make decisions that consider the needs of Latinxs and other students of color.

Unable to join our workshop with Dr. Garcia in person?  To provide an asynchronous option, we've developed a podcast reflection activity that allows you to choose from a list of relevant episodes of Dr. Gina Garcia's podcast ¿Qué pasa, HSIs? (each roughly an hour long, with topics ranging from Anti-Blackness at HSIs to Classified Professionals' self-advocacy and awareness) and engage with reflection questions about that episode.  We will be sure to share out the themes from your responses in a follow-up message after Flex Day!  (Submit your responses by end of Flex Day, in order to receive flex credit hours.)

Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity/Expression (SOGIE) 101

Facilitator: Ishani Dugar, Lead Trainer with San Mateo County PRIDE

In this collaborative workshop between the Office of Equity, Pride Center, and San Mateo County Pride Center, Lead Trainer Ishani Dugar will explain the differences and relationships between sexual orientation, sex, gender identity and expression through collaborative and multimodal activities. They will touch on other important topics, such as implementing inclusive practices, pronouns and cultural humility. There will be a period for questions and extensive resources will be distributed.

Achieving Excellence in Distance Education: Understanding the ACCJC Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) Policy and Quality Continuum Rubric

This 90-minute virtual workshop is designed to introduce faculty to the ACCJC Policy on Distance Education and Correspondence Education. Participants will explore the criteria outlined in the ACCJC Quality Continuum Rubric for Distance Education, which supports institutions in enhancing Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) definitions for Regular and Substantive Interaction and shared discussion around the rubric criteria, faculty will enhance their knowledge of compliance and elevate their instructional practices. This session is strongly recommended for faculty who are teaching online courses.

The Science Faculty Institute on Teaching and Learning is a Title-V-funded faculty development program that runs each Fall. In the program, interdisciplinary faculty participants implement a project to develop their teaching and promote equity and community in the classroom. At this Flex Day session, participants will discuss their classroom projects promoting equity, their impact on students, and their experience working in small interdisciplinary teams.

There are six Academic & Career Communities at the College of San Mateo. We invite you to join this workshop to form a shared understanding of the vision for Academic and Career Communities including goals and workplans. You can expect to learn about the ACCs, the ACC Faculty Coaching Model, ACC Newsletters, ACC Canvas Shells, and data-informed practices that led to the creation of ACC communities. 

 

Your participation is critical to inform the workplan of ACCs through feedback and suggestions. Also, it is a space for thought-partnership so you can get involved with the work of ACCs!

Have you ever wanted to learn more about a specific topic related to teaching and learning but have limited time to commit? Are you looking for opportunities to learn in small doses on your own time?

 

We invite you to take advantage of the SMCCCD microcourses. These are self-paced, asynchronous learning experiences that focus on specific topics of interest. Each microcourse takes 1-2 hours to complete, and you can self-enroll at any time. Upon completion, you will receive constructive feedback and a digital badge. Microcourses may be counted toward Flex credits. Complete one during Flex Day for automatic flex credit.
