Commencement

Incomplete Units

Students who lack units to be approved for graduation before the end of the spring semester may participate in the ceremony provided that the units required will be completed during the following summer term.  For summer session, a full-time load is considered to be 6 units.  Students are not permitted to take more than 11 units during the summer session without approval from a College of San Mateo counselor.  For more information, please see Unit Load Limitations in the Catalog.

The petition period is from April 15 to May 17, which coincides with the beginning of summer term registration. To petition to join the ceremony:

  1. Complete and print form Request to Participate
  2. Attach list of required units to be completed from Degree Works-WebSMART
  3. Include a print-out of summer term registration from WebSMART for required units
  4. Email all documents to the VP Office of Student Services at csmvpss@smccd.edu

If approved, students will be forwarded to the company that is producing the Commencement ceremony and the Bookstore to purchase any needed regalia.

Students who will be approved to participate - with units pending for completion in the summer term - will not have their names listed in the Commencement program until the following graduation year.  Only students who have completed all requirements for the current graduation year: summer, fall and spring are considered to be members of the graduating class.
