How to see with Artistic & Scientific Eyes Part I (Artistic Eyes)
Professor Mohsen Janatpour
We have two worlds: In our outer world, we exist, interact with others, and deal with the everyday commerce of life. At the same time, we live, dream, imagine, and think in our inner universe. Our mental imagery connects these worlds, and how we connect them determines the nature of our reality. Moreover, that connection is governed by the way we see the world. Seeing with both artistic and scientific eyes is a fundamental and fulfilling exercise in visualization that enriches our lives. I will draw on some concepts from my book, "Conjunctive Theory: Mental Imagery in the Arts and Sciences" (Cognella Publishing Company, 2023), and some examples to bring this idea home.

The Poetics of Science: Using a Creative Lens in Scientific Writing
Professor Jeramy Wallace

Building upon Professor Janatpour’s lecture on Conjunctive Theory and Mental Imagery, this workshop will encourage students to look at scientific writing, both their own and others’, using a creative “eye.” Workshop topics will include an overview of scientific writing and its overreliance on “objective” thinking, how to conduct field observations and take field notes using a creative lens, and how scientists can use creative thinking to not only improve the quality of their writing but also the depth of their scientific pursuits. The tools and techniques covered in this workshop will prepare students for their field trip to the Exploratorium.

The Scientific Creative: Utilizing Scientific Imagery in Creative Pursuits
Professor Jeramy Wallace

This workshop will follow up on Monday’s workshop and the students’ field trip to the Exploratorium, and it will build on Professor Janatpour’s seminar on the two types of brain states – ETBS and OTBS – and their concomitant Mental Imagery. This workshop will begin with a reflection and discussion of the students’ written artifacts from the Exploratorium field trip and then move into activities that demonstrate the importance of a scientific “mind” in artistic pursuits and analysis. Topics covered will include tips for creative writing, how to interpret and analyze art using a scientific “eye,” how to write a personal narrative that integrates creative and scientific thinking, and how artists and creatives can utilize a scientific lens in their pursuits (and vice versa). This workshop will also prepare students for their field trip to the Legion of Honor.
