Faculty-Specific Resources

The following faculty professional development resources and opportunities were created here at CSM, in the District, or in the California Community College system.  We will continue to update this list.  Do you have an additional opportunity or resource to share? Please let us know.  

Getting Started at CSM

  • Bulldog 101 is a year-long series on Flex Days, hosted by the President's Office, and designed to onboard and build community for all our new CSM employees. 
  • Course Design Corner is a resource hub developed by CSM instructional design faculty, with the goals of sharing key information that can help faculty at any part of their journey. Key topics covered include Getting Started, Mid-Semester Feedback, and Design on Demand.
  • The CSM Syllabus Hub offers a centralized place to review requirements, expectations, and important considerations around course syllabi at College of San Mateo. This guide includes a combination of resources, samples, and practical considerations to help address multiple syllabi-related needs across disciplines. It was developed by the CSM instructional design team and approved by the Academic Senate on May 13, 2025 (Read the AS resolution).
  • The Distance Education website provides information about distance education resources, including the Distance Education Handbook and trainings (Quality Online Teaching & Learning I & II) required for faculty teaching online.
  • The Faculty Handbook is a document updated annually by the Office of Instruction, that contains information about faculty-related policies and regulations. 
  • The RSI guide offers a collection of resources around Regular and Substantive Interaction guidelines for online courses. It provides timely information regarding CSM’s RSI policy, as it relates to instructional quality and accreditation requirements, and was created by the CSM Distance Education team in Spring 2025. 

Funding for Conferences & Release Time/Sabbatical

The San Mateo County Community College District provides a fund equal to 1% of expenditures for regular faculty salaries to provide faculty with individual professional development opportunities. Please see Article 13 of the AFT faculty contract to learn more about the program, and contact Faculty PD Committee Chair Jeramy Wallace with questions.

  • The Disability Resource Center website includes a "Faculty Resources" section to support faculty in their collaboration with the Disability Resource Center to provide accommodations to students with documented disabilities
  • CVC Online Course Rubric. is a tool create through the California Virtual Campus Online Education Initiative, to provide guidelines and a self-assessment tool for reviewing your course for accessibility.
  • Redesign for Equity & Accessibility Lab (REAL) Guide includes a self-assessment tool, resources, and samples of accessible and Universal Design for Learning (UDL)-informed course materials.

Trainings & Videos

  • Accessibility Basics with Popetech Checker (microcourse) is a 1.5-hour, asynchronous microcourse created within SMCCCD, on how to use Popetech accessibility checker.
  • Introduction to Assistive Technologies is an SMCCCD Microcourse: a 2-hour, self-paced and asynchronous training, available for flex credit (including automatic flex credit if completed on Flex Day). Learn about common assistive technologies used by students with disabilities and how to work with them as an instructor.
  • Opening Doors: A Workshop on Inclusive Course Design.was a Flex Day workshop offered by the Distance Education team, providing an overview of inclusive course design principles and accessibility considerations within Canvas.
  • "Empowering Students with Disabilities to Success" was a Flex Day workshop offered in April 2024, by the Disability Resource Center, about ways to build more inclusive classroom environments through the accessibility lens and acquire effective communication techniques for working with students with disabilities who present with challenging behaviors and struggle with engagement and participation.
  • SMCCCD's AI website provides resources on artificial intelligence, contributed by each college, by the SMCCCD's District Academic Senate, and by its District Teaching & Learning Committee sub-group.

Trainings and Videos

  • Assessment and Nuventive--Where do I start?  was a Flex Day session offered in Spring 2026, on how to complete and submit your assessment plan and how to input SLO and SAO data into Nuventive. Information is also provided on the Opt-in Faculty project option and SLO assessment visualization tools.
  • Creating an Equity-Centered Culture of Assessment at CSM was a Flex Day session offered in Fall 2025, on the elements of equity-centered assessment and building a culture of assessment at CSM.  
  • Rethinking Assessment in the Age of AI was a Flex Day session offered in Fall 2025 and facilitated by guest speaker Kelly Spoon, Math Faculty at San Diego Mesa College.  The session explored practical strategies for making assessments more meaningful for both faculty and students across disciplines.
  • The Distance Education website provides information on SMCCCD training requirements for faculty teaching online and hybrid courses 
  • The RSI guide offers a collection of resources around Regular and Substantive Interaction guidelines for online courses, including timely information regarding CSM’s RSI policy, as it relates to instructional quality and accreditation requirements. It was created by the Distance Education team in Spring 2025.
  • RSI in Action is an SMCCCD Microcourse: a 2-hour, self-paced asynchronous training available for Flex credit (including automatic Flex credit if completed on Flex Day, providing a comprehensive overview of updated Title V standards around Regular and Substantive Interaction in your online course.

  • The CSM Equitable Grading Booklet is a collection of resources to support exploration and implementation of equitable grading policies and serves as a companion to the CSM Equitable Grading Lab (EGL), an initiative that invites faculty to revise and re imagine aspects of their grading policies. The CSM Equitable Grading Booklet was developed by Julieth Diaz Benitez, in collaboration with Jennifer Howze-Owens, Cheyanne Cortez, Laura Woltag, Marisol Quevedo, and Erica Reynolds
  • The Redesign for Equity & Accessibility (REAL) Guide includes a section on grading that provides samples, guiding principles, and a self-assessment tool to support equity and accessibility in grading policy redesign.

Trainings

  • #Ungrading Part I is an SMCCCD Microcourse: a 2-hour self-paced, asynchronous training that can be completed for flex credit (including automatic flex credit if completed on Flex Day).  This training aims to rethink the history of grading systems and how they impact students, through an equity lens. You will begin to explore and evaluate small steps towards more equitable grading that you may use.
  • Instructor Feedback is an SMCCCD Microcourse: a 2.0-hour self-paced asynchronous training that can be completed for flex credit, including automatic Flex Day credit if completed on Flex Day.  In this training, you will explore strategic choices that influence the effectiveness of delivering informational feedback in support of student learning.

  • The Easy Button: Recording with Zoom and Panopto is an SMCCCD Microcourse: a 1.5-hour self-paced, asynchronous training that can be completed for flex credit (including automatic flex credit if completed on Flex Day).  This training helps you leverage your Zoom skills to record lectures and other instructional videos and easily deploy them to Panopto right inside your Canvas shell. 
  • Revamping Your Course Introduction Video is an SMCCCD Microcourse: a 1.5-hour self-paced, asynchronous training that can be completed for flex credit (including automatic flex credit if completed on Flex Day).  In this training, you will reflect on the potential of course introduction videos from a student-centered perspective, and create/revamp a course introduction video for a course of your choice.

  • The OER/ZTC website provides resources and updates about CSM's work to support Open Educational Resources and Zero Textook Cost, in alignment with the state-wide initiative to uplift equitable teaching practices and allow students to access affordable course materials on the first day.
  • Using OER & ZTC in Your Class is a guide from the CSM library that includes definitions, library support, and additional resources.

  • The OER/ZTC Summer Institute brings faculty together to explore the foundations of the work and make connections to their academic discipine.  Information about the Institute is shared out in the Spring.
  • The Path to Zero Textook Cost is an SMCCCD Microcourse: a 2-hour self-paced, asynchronous training that can be completed for flex credit, including automatic flex credit if completed on Flex Day. This microcourse will familiarize you with key criteria of the ZTC course designation, and will help you identify ZTC materials for your class. 
  • Copyright in Education is an SMCCCD Microcourse: a 2-hour self-paced, asynchronous training that can be completed for flex credit, including automatic flex credit if completed on Flex Day.  This microcourse will introduce the basics of copyright in education, including key topics such as Fair Use, licensing, public domain, and SMCCCD institutional policies.
  • No course fees and no course costs? Utilizing free course materials to engage your classroom community was a Flex Day session offered in Spring 2025. 
  • Identify, Adopt, Revise: 3 Routes to Quality Course Materials was a Flex Day session offered in Spring 2024. 
  • The RSI guide offers a collection of resources around Regular and Substantive Interaction guidelines for online courses. It provides timely information regarding CSM’s RSI policy, as it relates to instructional quality and accreditation requirements and was developed by the CSM Distance Education team in spring of 2025.
  • The RSI Course is a 5-hour, self-paced training on our Regular and Substantive Interaction Policy, required of all faculty.

Trainings

  • Reimagining the Syllabus is a SMCCCD microcourse, a 2-hour self-paced, asynchronous learning experience. Upon completion, you will receive constructive feedback and a digital badge. Microcourses may be counted toward Flex credits. Complete one during Flex Day for automatic flex credit.
