The materials are organized into five areas of course design: Course Outline of Record (COR), syllabi, assignments, discussions/activities, and grading policies. Faculty shared their research and submitted their materials in a spirit of cross-disciplinary collaboration and to promote equity and accessibility in our courses and curriculum.  CSM's The REAL Guide was developed by the CRPP Grant Planning Committee and our 21 REAL Faculty Participants.

College of San Mateo faculty who teach online (fully online or hybrid) must meet training requirements, as adopted by Academic Senate in 2021. Quality Online Teaching & Learning – Level 1 and Quality Online Teaching & Learning – Level 2 are courses facilitated by the District Distance Education Advisory Committee. Dates for future trainings are released mid-semester (ex. Spring training dates are released mid-fall semester). Registration can be accessed on the CSM Distance Education website. The Distant Education Coordinator is also a valuable resource.  

The RSI guide offers a collection of resources around Regular and Substantive Interaction guidelines for online courses. It provides timely information regarding CSM’s RSI policy, as it relates to instructional quality and the upcoming accreditation visit. We recommend taking the time to explore each section of the guide and diving deep into those that seem most relevant to your own needs. The RSI Guide was developed by the CSM Distance Education team in spring of 2025.

The CSM Equitable Grading Lab booklet serves as a companion to the CSM Equitable Grading Lab (EGL), an initiative that invites faculty to revise and re imagine aspects of their grading policies. Even if you are not participating in the EGL, you will find a collection of resources to support your exploration and implementation of equitable grading practices in your courses. The booklet was updated in summer of 2025 to include faculty case studies across disciplines. Dive in! 

The CSM Equitable Grading Booklet was developed by Julieth Diaz Benitez, in collaboration with Jennifer Howze-Owens, Cheyanne Cortez, Laura Woltag, Marisol Quevedo, and Erica Reynolds.

In an effort to continue identifying ways to uplift equitable teaching practices, the state of California and the state Chancellor’s office have funded a multi-million dollar initiative to convert courses, certificate, and degree pathways to courses that allow students to access course materials on the first day. The College of San Mateo has curated guides and an OER/ZTC website to support this work. Each Summer, the OER/ZTC Institute brings faculty together to explore the foundations of the work and make connections to their academic discipline. Information about the Institute is sent each spring semester.

The OER and No Cost Teaching guide provides robust information on many topics related to open education resources. Path to ZTC self-paced training can be accessed, if you are interested in learning more. The Copyright & Fair Use guide explains the role between instructional materials, teaching, and legal responsibility. To dive deeper, the Copyright in Education self-paced training is available.
