College of San Mateo and Sustainability

Over the last five years, College of San Mateo has undergone the most significant construction activity since the College Heights campus was completed in 1963. I am very grateful for the support of the voters in San Mateo County who overwhelming passed Measure C in 2001 and Measure A in 2005. By law, these bonds were to be used exclusively for new construction and renovation projects.

Civil Discourse

Dear CSM Students, During the last few weeks there were some incidents in which student government participants were targeted with verbal and written attacks. I want you to know, as president of College of San Mateo, I do not condone derogatory and hurtful personal attacks under any circumstances. In one case we had anonymous, unauthorized [...]

San Bruno Fire

My heart goes out to the victims of the San Bruno Fire. In an era when our state and our country is polarized on the simplest of issues, it is nice to see people come together, roll up their sleeves, and contribute in multiple ways to help those in need. Their actions show the true [...]

Some Advice for New College Students

I began my association with community colleges 30 years ago when I enrolled at my local community college as a freshman. California was a student friendly state back in 1980—community college tuition was free, there were no parking fees, and the grand total cost for all of my text books was $70. My only option [...]

Civic Engagement

I live on a busy street in Redwood City. My wife and I have always been concerned about speeding on the street—especially in the days when our children were young. For years my neighbors and I would gripe about the speeding problem, yet none of us did anything about it. Last weekend a young mother [...]

The Word on Campus

Every so often I get word of a question swirling around campus. These things seem to take on a life of their own. I would like to take an opportunity to clear up a few rumors that I have heard recently: Summer Session There are a number of community colleges throughout the state that are [...]

Teach-ins

Governor Schwarzenegger delivered his budget update last month. While I am encouraged by the Governor’s remarks about higher education, I am also skeptical. I believe that the Governor’s budget is based on estimates that are not realistic. Thus, I fear another round of cuts to higher education. These cuts will further limit access to all [...]

Our Students

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to hold an open forum for students regarding our college budget. Like every community college in the state, we have begun the process of planning for painful cuts. I will admit that I was a bit nervous before the forum. I did not know what the mood of [...]
