It looks like we finally have a budget from the state – for now. However, experts are already predicting another round of cuts by next January when reality sets in once again. I recently read an excellent analysis regarding California’s annual budget crisis in the New York Times. Here is the link: www.nytimes.com/2009/07/22/us/22calif.html.

I have written many all-college emails regarding our budget and I will not repeat those emails here. I will be talking about our budget challenges on Opening Day. While we cannot ignore the brutal reality of our budget woes, we must continue to move forward as an institution—we owe that to our students, to our community, and to ourselves. This is the key point that I will make on Opening Day. We are prepared to weather the budget storm for the upcoming fiscal year but we have some difficult choices to make in order to get through the years that follow.
