"ESL Assist"  is intended to provide student services and instructional support to ESL students who have been identified as underserved, particularly the immigrant and low income populations:
  • Institutional data show that of all Basic Skills Student groups (English, Math, Reading and ESL), ESL has the largest representation of low-income students.
  • Unlike their international student counterparts, ESL immigrant students do not have a Center or staff dedicated specifically to them and their unique needs.
ESL Assist is dedicated to helping close any gaps in instruction and service for these students. Interventions are in development to improve retention and persistence for these groups as well as help these students integrate more fully into the CSM community. In the 2014-15 school year, ESL faculty members are formalizing relationships with CSM Counseling, the CSM Learning Center and the San Mateo Adult School as well as other collaborators to initiate one or more of the following pilot projects in 2015-16: ESL Peer Mentors/Tutors, New Student Orientation(s) for Non-native Speakers, Grammar Jam (acceleration project).
