Dr. Robert (Bobby) Nakamoto
Vice President of Instruction Candidate
Dr. Robert (Bobby) Nakamoto is an accomplished educational leader with more than two decades of experience advancing student success, equity, and institutional effectiveness across K–12, community college, and university systems. As a first-generation community college graduate, he brings both personal and professional commitment to expanding access and improving outcomes for historically underserved students. He currently serves as Dean of Social Sciences at Chabot College, where he provides strategic leadership for eleven academic disciplines, advancing data-informed planning, equity-centered practices, and workforce development.
Dr. Nakamoto’s broader leadership experience spans accreditation, enrollment management, curriculum & assessment, budgeting, and instructional supervision in a multi-college district. He has championed culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy. He played a key role in developing the Chabot MOVEMENT Learning Community, integrating Ethnic Studies as a core component and supporting curricular expansion to more inclusively reflect diverse student identities and experiences—efforts that contributed to the department receiving an exemplary program award from the state Chancellor’s Office.
Dr. Nakamoto leads innovative workforce development efforts in early childhood education, grounded in labor-market and student-access data. He spearheaded the development of an ECD Apprenticeship Program and revived the sunsetting California Early Childhood Mentor Program (CECMP), restoring a critical statewide infrastructure for mentoring and workforce preparation. He has strengthened teacher pathways in partnership with the East Bay College Agile Network, Bay Area K-16 Collaborative, Eden ROP, and K–12 districts, aligning intersegmental transfer programs with regional workforce and education needs.
Dr. Nakamoto earned his Bachelor’s degree in Human Development from California State University, Hayward, and his Master’s degree in Psychology from California State University, Northridge. He holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership from San Francisco State University, where he received a Distinguished Achievement Award. Dr. Nakamoto serves as a regular lecturer, teaching courses in integrated budget & planning, leadership, and systemic reform.
Known for his collaborative leadership style and commitment to shared governance, Dr. Nakamoto builds strong cross-functional partnerships that advance student learning, workforce mobility, and institutional excellence. Outside of his professional work, he enjoys international travel and cuisine, sports and fitness, and performing music with several Bay Area bands.
