Dr. Carla Grandy
Vice President of Instruction Candidate
Dr. Carla Grandy is a compassionate leader with 16 years of progressive experience in the California Community College System.
Carla began her community college career as full-time faculty. She was faculty for twelve years, first at City College of San Francisco and then at Skyline College. During her time as faculty, Carla served as faculty coordinator for the Energize Colleges Program, in which students were able to complete paid internships focused on energy savings on campus and in the community. Carla also coordinated other sustainability focused work on both campuses.
Carla served as Director of Guided Pathways at Skyline College and led the campus-wide implementation of Guided Pathways. In this role, she worked in the Student Equity and Support Division to implement equity focused practices across the campus as well as to break down silos across divisions and between instruction and student services. From this work, she gained a perspective on the importance of integrated services and student-centered scheduling that she carries into the role of Vice President of Instruction
As Dean of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Division at Skyline, Carla oversaw 20 transfer and CTE departments, including Allied Health Programs and the bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care. Carla brought equity-centered professional development opportunities to the STEM Division and worked to ensure equitable outcomes for students who are underrepresented in STEM. Carla oversaw the implementation of multiple state, federal, and local grants, including awards from the National Science Foundation, Department of Education (HSI-Title V), Department of Energy, and MESA, among others.
Carla has served as Interim Vice President of Instruction for the past year and during that time has worked closely with faculty leadership to streamline and clarify procedures such as course cancellations and faculty coordination time. She has also worked to bring transparency to processes such as resource requests and has championed professional development opportunities that would create capacity for faculty to incorporate equity practices into their classes. In addition, Carla has supported the institutionalization of the Sustainability as Social Justice Committee and the re-launch of that work through Earth Day events.
Throughout her career, Carla has worked to identify culturally relevant ways that faculty can connect with their students. This work has evolved throughout her career and as Vice President of Instruction, her goal is to foster an environment in which students feel seen and respected, and faculty and staff have the tools needed to create and support that sense of belonging.
Carla has a B.S. degree in Environmental Earth Science from Texas Christian University, a M.S. degree in Oceanography from Oregon State University, and a Ph.D. in Earth Science from the University of California at Santa Cruz. Prior to becoming faculty, Carla worked in the field of environmental resource management for the California State Coastal Conservancy and as a private consultant.
In her free time, Carla enjoys being outdoors with her husband and two children. On the weekend, she loves to hike and cook with her family. Carla also volunteers for local non-profit organizations that promote environmental protection.
