Ed Barberini

Ed Barberini Ed Barberini joined the San Mateo Police Department as its chief in February 2020. With 27 years of law enforcement experience, he served as Police Chief of the San Bruno Police Department for five years and Chief of Police for the Millbrae Police Bureau for two years. Prior to these roles, he spent over two decades with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, gaining experience in various disciplines including administration, transportation, corrections, field operations, court security, and bomb squad operations. He also held the position of director of the county’s Office of Emergency Services and Homeland Security.

A lifelong resident of San Mateo County, Ed resides in neighboring Belmont with his wife, Jackie. He holds a Master of Public Administration from California State University, East Bay; a Master of Arts in Homeland Security Studies from the Naval Post Graduate School; and a bachelor’s degree in political science from San Francisco State University. Ed has completed the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Command College, Harvard University’s Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program, and the Local Governance Institute at Stanford University. He is actively involved in numerous professional organizations and has previously served as president of the San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association.
