Remote Learning Accommodations

As the San Mateo Community College District transitions to online instruction, the DRC wants to ensure your accommodations are in place and you are fully supported. The DRC is operational during this time.

If you have not already done so, please provide your instructors with your letter of accommodations. if you need any of the following: counseling appointment, alternate media, assistive technology support, or questions or concerns, contact csmdrc@smccd.edu. Many of these requests are also available under forms and once we receive your request, we will be in touch.

You may call our main number (650) 574-6438. If we are unable to answer your call, please leave a detailed message with your name and G# and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

If you feel you may benefit from academic adjustments and auxiliary aids, please complete the application for services and upload your verification of disability. You will find this application under Overview/New CSM student/Getting Started with the DRC.

In-Class Accommodations

Classes are available through an online format utilizing Canvas. Most professors will be using discussion boards, posting PowerPoints and lectures notes, and posting videos as part of their instruction. Because of the change in format, there should not be a need for a peer note-taker. If you have any concerns about the accessibility of methods and/or materials being used in your online class, please contact the DRC.

Exam/Quiz Accommodations

Instructors are able to adjust exam and quiz time in Canvas. Your instructors should adjust your time to reflect your accommodated extended time for testing. You do not need to submit a Test Accommodation Request Form in order for your instructor to make these adjustments to your exam/quiz time. If your instructor has not made the extended time adjustment, please remind them to do so. If you are having difficulty communicating with your instructor on the need for extended-time, please contact the DRC.

You may also complete an Accommodation Check-in form to notify us if you are not receiving your extended time after providing your accommodation letter. This is located in the Forms section.

Counseling/Accommodation Appointments

If you would like to request an appointment, contact us at csmdrc@smccd.edu or by calling our main number (650) 574-6438. Appointments will be available via phone or Zoom whichever format you feel most comfortable using. Please be aware that phone calls may appear as private/blocked and/or you will not recognize the number. Please answer any calls you receive during your appointed meeting time. Zoom: Is an easy to use conferencing platform that can be used on your cell phone, computer, or iPad, with or without video. If you chose the Zoom option, we will provide you information via an invite through your campus email. It’s really easy to use.

Assistive Technology & Alternate Media

Kurzweil 3000 will still be available to students who have this as an audiobook/alternate media accommodation. Kurzweil does work in Canvas. If you need support in using Kurzweil in Canvas, please contact the DRC.

If you encounter any inaccessible materials that need to be converted into an electronic format please contact the DRC. We will continue with the 30-day equipment check-in appointments via phone or zoom. As always, if you are having any difficulties, please reach out.

Tutoring Support

Transitioning to online instruction can be very challenging. We are here to help during this transition and beyond. The DRC is offering tutoring via Zoom (it will be a more enriched experience if you use video for this). If you are interested in tutoring, please email us your available days/times and we will do our best to match your requested time.
