The Firefighter I Academy (FIRE 793) is state-certified as a regional academy. Students who complete this training, and possess a valid, current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification, can begin the process of testing for employment at fire departments.
The Firefighter I Academy meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings (1800 - 2200) and Saturdays (0800 - 1800) and some Sundays (0800 - 1800) for the entire semester.
The pre-requisite for the FFI Academy is admission into the Fire Academy. In order to be eligible for admission, students must have completed six (6) units of Fire Technology coursework, with a grade of "C" or better at the time of application.
Three (3) of those units must be from FIRE 715 - Principles of Emergency Services or the equivalent course from another Fire Technology program. Students with at least one year of fire service experience in a fire suppression role may use their experience in lieu of completed coursework.
Units from EMT courses do not count towards this pre-requisite. While it is not required, it is recommended that students have a current EMT certificate.
