Fire Academy
The Fire Academy at College of San Mateo is state-certified as an Accredited Regional Training Program (ARTP). The academy is offered twice a year during the fall and spring semesters.
Each session meets Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., and is a 17-unit course.

To get a general idea about other related costs, download the Fire Academy Course Needs document. Each academy group will receive updated and current information once accepted into the course.
All participants must:
- Possess a current, valid EMT certificate or Paramedic license, and
- Meet one of the three prerequisite requirement options listed below.
Fire Technology Coursework option
- Successfully complete FIRE 715 - Principles of Emergency Services, AND
- Successfully complete at least three (3) additional units of Fire Technology coursework
- Have one year of fire service experience in a fire suppression unit (may be used in lieu of coursework)
- Provide written proof from your agency and a resume
- Provide written proof from your hiring agency
- Sponsored recruits should review the Pathway to the Firefighter Academy Course checklist
- Complete all Fire Academy prerequisites in conjunction with applying to College of San Mateo.
