Fire Academy

The Fire Academy at College of San Mateo is state-certified as an accredited regional training program (ARTP). The academy is offered twice a year during the fall and spring semesters. Each presentation meets Monday - Friday (0830 - 1730). This is a 17 unit course. For more information about enrollment fees, visit the Fees page.

Each academy group will receive updated and current information once accepted into the course.

All participants must possess a current, valid EMT certificate or Paramedic license and meet one of the three requiement options listed below.

Fire Technology Coursework option
  • Have successfully completed FIRE 715 - Principles of Emergency Services, AND
  • Have successfully completed at least three (3) additional units of Fire Technology coursework
Fire Service Experience option
  • One year of fire service experience in a fire suppression unit may use their experience in lieu of completed coursework
  • Written proof from agency and resume required
Fire Agency Sponsorship option
  • Written proof from hiring agency required

All coursework must be completed with a grade of "C" or better. Equivalent courses from another certified California Community College Fire Technology program will be accepted as well. All coursework must be completed when submitting packets; "In Progress" coursework will not be accepted.

To ensure eligibility for an upcoming academy, your documentation should be in order by October for spring semester offerings and by May for fall semester offerings.

Prerequisite Verification Packet Submission Window:  Monday, June 12 - Thursday, July 20, 2023
  • Verification packets will be accepted during the dates above or until the class fills, whichever happens first.
  • Verification packets received outside of these dates will not be considered and the submitter will be notified by email.
