Communication Studies

Welcome to the Communication Studies Department at College of San Mateo!

An A.A. degree in Communication Studies prepares students for transfer to a baccalaureate institution for a degree in Communication Studies or a related discipline. The ability to organize one’s thoughts and present them with clarity and precision are communication skills transferable to all careers.

The study of communication enriches our relationships and develops our abilities to send and receive messages more effectively. Our discipline explores public speaking, interpersonal communication, small group communication, intercultural communication, and oral interpretation. Moreover, you will learn how current technology and various cultural perspectives influence our course offerings. Earning a degree or certificate in Communication Studies provides the foundation to be an effective communicator, successful college student, and a well-informed member of society.

Communication Studies Program Learning Outcomes

Student completing this program will be able to:
  1. Write a speech outline that demonstrates proper organizational components.
  2. Apply learned skills and communication theories in teamwork.
  3. Demonstrate ability to effectively deliver presentations.
  4. Apply critical thinking skills to analyze conflict and controversial situations.
