CSM’s Artwork Design Contest showcases the creative talents of our campus community. Students and employees submitted original artwork celebrating CSM’s status as a Hispanic-Serving Institute (HSI) and CSM as an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI), with winning pieces printed on t-shirts and posters to be available for purchase at our CSM Bulldog Bookstore. Fiona Mak: "Sembrando Futuro"
Fiona Mak is a sophomore majoring in studio arts, planning to transfer to UCLA for digital media and design. As an Asian American artist, she draws inspiration from a diverse cultural perspective. Her artwork for the Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) embodies resilience and unity between minority groups, celebrating their traditions and achievements. She aims to inspire new thinking, foster belonging, and empower all students while promoting inclusivity and togetherness. Her work highlights the beauty in differences and advocates for equity, serving as a testament to the importance of cross-cultural collaboration and the value of every student in academia.
Mariana Lopez: "Soy Yo"
Mariana Lopez is a first-year student at College of San Mateo, where she is studying business administration with the goal of becoming an accountant. She has loved making art for as long as she can remember and shares her creative journey on Instagram at @lovostudio_. During high school, Mariana participated in several art showcases, including a Save the Bees exhibit and one at the Martin Luther King Community Center. She views art as a visualization of history and knowledge and aims to capture the silly, the good, and the serious aspects of culture through her work.
Eden Kwan: "Dragon"
Eden Kwan is a junior enrolled in the Middle College program at College of San Mateo. They enjoy science fiction, watching movies with friends, and drawing. In their free time, Eden works on writing a novel, making their own clothes, and animating. Their design was inspired by the dragon motifs on traditional Korean drums they saw while growing up.
Ibuki Hlaing: "Legacy of Wisdom, Power of Today"
Ibuki is a Program Services Coordinator at College of San Mateo with a background in program coordination in higher education, event management, and digital marketing. She started exploring graphic design during the pandemic, teaching herself programs like Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. Since then, she has used her skills to create visuals for events and workshops, aiming to make information clear and engaging. As a first-generation immigrant from Japan, Ibuki values designs that are inclusive and accessible, hoping to connect with diverse audiences through thoughtful and creative visuals.
