Nicol Garcia Laura, Biology/Bioengineering When did you know that you wanted to become a biologist/bioengineer?
I knew I wanted to become a Biology/Bioengineer major after being exposed to it in a MESA conference.

Do you often take advantage of programs and offerings at College of San Mateo?
Yes, I take full advantage of the school programs. Not many know about the impressive resources that’s available in this two year institution. I, for example, have taken advantage of tutors that have helped me with my writing and studying skills, the health center that has helped me deal with physical, health, or emotional issues as well as school activities that helped me build a community on campus. Using these services has helped me grow academically, has taught me time management and helped advised me with courses to take for the career I want.

What are you working on (projects/research)?
A research I am working on is a Biotechnology Investigation about transforming bacteria with recombinant plasmids.

Who has been your most influential role model?
My mother has been my influential role model.

What are your future plans?
My plans is to transfer and ultimately get my MD/PhD.

What do you like about MESA the most?
There is also a sense of community within the program that wants to see you succeed. Based on your major, they take you to: conferences, field trips, and expose you with information, and get you involve in your career of interest.
