Jamie Calma

Class of 2018
Major:
Biochemistry

Jamie CalmaWhen did you know that you wanted to become a research scientist?
When I was in High school I was at loss with what I wanted to become in the future. I knew I wanted to be in the STEM field, but I was unaware of the possible careers I can have with a STEM major besides becoming a nurse and a doctor. When I went to College of San Mateo, I took an intro to biology class, and the professor suggested that I apply for a research internship. Looking at what research entails, I was very fascinated with the thought of being immersed in a community that sought to find answers to unknown phenomena in the natural world and to find cure to diseases. Since then, I have taken steps to become a research scientist and become a part of the research community.

Why did you choose UC Berkeley?
I chose UC Berkeley because it allows me to stay in the Bay Area and build the network I’ve currently built up through the summer research internship, Bridges to Baccalaureate at San Francisco State University. In addition, when I visited the UC Berkeley campus I was captivated by the environment, I love the cold-gloomy weather, and loved the history that came with the buildings.

Do you often take advantage of programs and offerings at College of San Mateo?
Yes, as I have mentioned, I acquired a summer research internship through College of San Mateo. Words cannot stress enough how much this internship I acquired from CSM has changed my life for the better and helped shape my future. I strongly recommend students to take advantage of what opportunities are being offered here at CSM because they can be, more often than not, the answer to your problems.

What are you working on (projects/research)?
I am currently on my way to researching how cells organize their organelles in budding yeast cells.

Who has been your most influential role model?
My mom has been an influential role model for me. She has taught me that diligence and hard work enable you to succeed in life. She is also my inspiration and the aspect of my life that spurs me to reach for my dreams.

What are your future plans?
My future plans include getting my Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Then, apply to graduate school to immerse myself in more research and get my PhD in the process. After that, I would love to get a Post-Doctorate and hopefully become a Principal Investigator of a lab in the future.

What do you like about MESA the most?
I love how supportive and inclusive MESA is at CSM. I was able to partake in field trips and conference that helped shape my interests in the research field, and I was able to meet like-minded individuals that support and encourage me for success.
