Gricelda I. Tecun

Class of 2018
Major:
Computer Science

Gricelda I. TecunWhen did you know that you wanted to become a computer scientist?
I decided to become a Computer Scientist since I was in my country 6 years ago.

Why did you choose to transfer to San Jose State University?
I chose to transfer to San Jose State University because many people say that the university is the ideal for my career, Computer Science. Also, it is the closest one to where I live and while visiting the campus with MESA once, I was able to connect and feel identified.

Do you often take advantage of programs and offerings at College of San Mateo?
Yes, I regularly visit my counselor, and I frequency use all the lab such math and CIS.

What are you working on projects?
I’m not working on research, but maybe I can include that I have been doing volunteer hours in the Library of Burlingame. I feel so blessed to know that by cooperating just a little bit, we can make a big change in other countries. For instance, we were selling books and having donations from customers to help Africa to have libraries and other supports. I am also a computer science tutor and I help fellow students with homework questions or prepare for exams.

Who has been your most influential role model?
My role models are all successful women that have dealt with difficult things, but they never give up.

What are your future plans?
I’m planning to graduate in two or three years, have a family, it would also be great to bring my parents to the USA because I’m not sure if my country will become more violent than nowadays. The situation of the gangs gets worse every day in El Salvador. It would be great to find projects to help other families from Latino communities to enjoy the right to live in peace.

What do you like about MESA the most?
I really like the opportunity that they to visit for first time two universities which are San Jose State University and Santa Cruz University. The idea of internships is helpful to improve our skills in a real environment. It was an amazing experiences. Also, to have met many staff of Mesa is fantastic.
