The English Department provides students with a broad-based foundation for transfer to baccalaureate institutions, offering the required courses in composition as well as literature and creative writing courses, which are open to English majors, non-majors, community members, and those working toward our Certificate of Achievement in Creative Writing. Each semester, we organize the Writers' Ruckus, a curated public reading highlighting our many talented student writers. The Literature Club and the Creative Writing Club invite students to weekly meetings. And, we regularly bring celebrated writers for special readings; past guests have included Tommy Orange, Brian Turner, Jamil Zaki, Jaime Cortez, Tongo Eisen-Martin, Kay Ryan, and Adam Johnson.
Our courses in composition, critical thinking, literature, and creative writing may lead to career opportunities including advertising copy writer or manager, columnist/journalist, editor, educator, freelance writer, information specialist, lexicographer, librarian, media planner, novelist, poet, public relations officer, publisher, radio/television announcer, reporter, researcher, technical writer, and writing consultant. Additional career opportunities include business administrator, civil servant, clergy member, foreign service officer, fund raiser, insurance examiner, legislative assistant, and program developer--in short, any profession that requires skill in reading, storytelling, and communication.
