Meet the Faculty

Photo of Jose Guttierrez

Jose Gutierrez

Jose transferred from American River Community College to the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his BS in Bioengineering. After receiving his BS, he attended Stanford Masters in Mechanical Engineering. Currently, Jose is exploring ways to deliver engineering material that is not only effective but also increases student self-efficacy. As a former community college student, he knows that one of the biggest challenges, beyond learning difficult concepts, is learning to believe in your own ability to apply them to solve real-world problems.

Nery Lopez

Nery Lopez’s path into engineering began at Skyline College, where he was a community college student and a student parent before transferring to UC Berkeley. As a first-generation engineer, he knows that getting through an engineering program takes persistence, support, and a willingness to keep working through problems that do not always make sense the first time.Today, Nery works as an engineer at Woodard & Curran, where he especially enjoys hydraulic modeling, problem-solving, and taking on a good technical challenge. He enjoys bringing real-world engineering experiences into the classroom and helping students connect what they learn to the kinds of problems engineers solve every day.Outside of engineering, Nery enjoys playing guitar, working on bonsai, and spending time with his family.
