Eligibility

All nominees must have been employed at College of San Mateo for at least one year. In addition, there are specific nominee criteria for each group:

  • Faculty: A nominee must be a faculty member, full or part time, instructional or non-instructional.
  • Staff: A nominee must be a non-temporary classified staff member, represented or non-represented, full or part time.
  • Manager/Administrator: A nominee must be a CSM Management Council member, full or part time.

Those who have won may not be considered again unless five or more years have passed since they received the award. An award may be made posthumously in the name of the employee.

Criteria

The award recipients will have made a significant impact at College of San Mateo through exceptional performance, ingenuity, collegiality, and service to students as demonstrated by the criteria listed.  A dedicated, and inspirational employee who serves as a role model and mentor to others is especially valued at College of San Mateo. One who is open to change, innovation, and makes a discernible impact on the college, students, and community, while valuing and respecting others and serving beyond their own area of responsibility is a true representative of outstanding service.

Each nominee should excel in three or more of the following areas:

  • Strives for Excellence in their Discipline (Faculty Award): Demonstrates knowledge of discipline area and implements innovative ideas or practices;
  • Provides Exemplary Service: Serves students and the campus community with integrity, authentic care, and understanding; works to break down barriers and provide support in innovative and thoughtful ways;
  • Engages in the Campus Community: Participates with the campus community both formally and informally; builds connections with departments, programs, and colleagues; leverages campus connections to support and enhance the student experience;
  • Leads or Acts as Part of a Collaborative Team: Acknowledges and engages each other in collaboration; thinks independently and yet equally values each member of the team; holds self and colleagues accountable; works toward solidarity without silos; empowers and supports team members to achieve excellence; celebrates the accomplishments and achievements of self and others;
  • Has a Deliberate Student Focus: Engaged with student needs; thinks and acts with clearly defined goals to achieve results; continuously reinforces the College’s commitment to social justice, equity and access; thinks and acts with passion, purpose, and humility; is intentional and deliberate, and knows when to challenge the status quo;
  • Values Reflection & Growth: Performs regular self-analysis of deeply held assumptions; regularly participates in professional development and encourages it for others; initiates and leads professional development opportunities for the campus community;
  • Inspirational: Provides mentorship, engages in advocacy, and inspires students and colleagues. motivates the student/peers/college community that they work with to bring out the best in others.

Selection

After nominations are submitted, the following committees evaluate and rank their nominees. Each committee will forward at least two recommendations to the College President. The president, in consultation with the executive leadership team, will make a final selection based on how well the candidates meet the award standards.

The screening committees for each group are as follows:

  • Faculty: The screening committee is composed of a minimum of three (3) members of the CSM Academic Senate, including at least one non-instructional faculty member. The Academic Senate President will select the committee members each year.
  • Staff: The screening committee is composed of a minimum of four (4) members which includes the CSM Classified Senate President, the CSM Classified Senate Vice President, the CSEA 2nd Vice President for CSM, and the CSEA Chapter 33 President.
  • Managers/Administrators: A subcommittee of the Management Council, composed of five (5) members, will serve as the screening committee. The screening committee will contain one Cabinet member, two deans, and two managers/directors. No one nominated may serve on the screening committee.
Any screening committee may also include one student representative in addition to the membership structures listed above.

The Equity and Justice Award recipients will have made a significant impact at College of San Mateo and/or the local community through their dedication, leadership, ingenuity, collegiality, and service to students as demonstrated by the criteria listed.  An inspirational partner who serves as a role model and agent for positive change in the community is especially valued at College of San Mateo. One who is open to change, innovation, and makes a discernible impact on the college, students, and community, while valuing and respecting others and serving beyond their own area of responsibility is a true representative of an outstanding partner. 

Each nominee should excel in two or more of the following areas:

  • Promotes Equity and Justice across Campus: Demonstrates work to promote equity and justice across the College as an advocate, activist, teacher, or learner; facilitates opportunities to learn and bring people from different backgrounds in the college together;
  • Advocates and Promotes Equity and Justice Awareness: Participates, develops, and promotes programs or events that support equity and justice awareness and intercultural engagement efforts; demonstrates a high level of commitment to equity, justice, service, teaching, and scholarship;
  • Understands and Demonstrates how Equity and Justice are Integral to the Mission and Values of the College of San Mateo: Serves as an advocate for the interests of student populations and communities most impacted by structural racism and discrimination; displays commitment to valuing equity and justice above and beyond assigned job duties; builds and sustains practices that challenge systems of power, privilege and inequity;
  • Uplifts Collaborative Efforts in Equity and Justice: Acknowledges and engages the campus community in collaboration around issues related to equity and justice; thinks independently and yet equally values ideas from the campus community; works toward unity and building solidarity without silos;
  • Has a Deliberate Student Focus: Maintains a student-centered focus; continuously reinforces the College’s commitment to equity and justice; knows when to challenge systems of power, privilege, and inequity; is intentional and deliberate when addressing institutional structures, policies, practices and social norms that perpetuate bias, prejudice, racism and discrimination impeding student access and success.

Selection

After nominations are submitted, the screening committee evaluates and ranks their nominees. The screening committee is composed of a minimum of three (3) members that include one employee from the Office of Equity, one member of the Educational Equity Committee (EEC), and a student. The chair of EEC will select the committee members each year.

A nominee must be a community member or organization who has significantly contributed to the advancement of the Mission, Vision and Values of College of San Mateo through collaboration and partnership during the calendar year. Those who have won may not be considered again unless five or more years have passed since they received the award. An award may be made posthumously in the name of a community member.

Criteria

The Outstanding Community Partner Award recipients will have made a significant impact at College of San Mateo and/or the local community through their dedication, leadership, ingenuity, collegiality, and service to students as demonstrated by the criteria listed.  An inspirational partner who serves as a role model and agent for positive change in the community is especially valued at College of San Mateo. One who is open to change, innovation, and makes a discernible impact on the college, students, and community, while valuing and respecting others and serving beyond their own area of responsibility is a true representative of an outstanding partner. 

Each nominee should excel in two or more of the following areas:

  • Provides Exemplary Service to Local Students and the Community: Serves San Mateo County students and the local community with authentic care and understanding; works to break down barriers and provide support in innovative and thoughtful ways;
  • Engages with the CSM Community: Participates with the CSM campus community both formally and informally; builds connections with departments, programs, and colleagues; leverages campus connections to support and enhance the student and community experiences;
  • Acts as Part of a Collaborative Team of Community Leaders: acknowledges and engages other individuals and organizations in collaboration; thinks independently and yet equally values other collaborators, organizations, and team members’ input; holds self and others accountable; works toward unity without silos; empowers and supports others to achieve excellence and inspire positive change;
  • Has a Deliberate Student Focus: maintains a student-centered focus; is disciplined and engaged; thinks and acts with clearly defined goals to achieve results; continuously reinforces a commitment to social justice, equity, and access; thinks and acts with passion, purpose, and humility; is intentional and deliberate, and knows when to challenge the status quo.

Selection

After nominations are submitted, the screening committee evaluates and ranks their nominees. The screening committee is the CSM President’s Advocacy Council.
