The Writing Center: About Us

Where is the Writing Center?
The Writing Center is located in Building 18, Room 104.

Who can use the Writing Center?
All CSM students are welcome to use the study spaces in the Writing Center. Students who are enrolled in English 850 or an English composition course, can use the center to print for their English course or make appointments for essay conferences with English faculty scheduled in the center. Essay conferences are available Monday thru Thursday from 9am-7:20pm and Friday from 9am-1:30pm. Any College of San Mateo student can use the center to schedule an appointment to meet with an instructor for help with an essay during drop-in hours. Drop-in hours are Monday thru Thursday from noon-2:30pm.

What can I do at the Writing Center?
You can make appointments to meet with an English Instructor for one-on-one tutoring; advice on an essay or paper for any course at CSM; or help with a personal statement or work-related writing project. You can work on a specific writing skill by completing tutorials, which are found in the Writing Center and on our website. In conjunction with the ESL Center, you can attend ESL Grammar and Editing Workshops that focus on grammar. You can learn about writing and literature as well as writers and their cultures by using our books and instructional materials or by viewing DVDs and VHS tapes. You can also use the computers in the Quiet Room to research and write your essays. Students can also print essays for their English class in the Writing Center.
