Matt Layten enters his first year leading the College of San Mateo track and field and cross country teams. Layten looks to develop the Bulldogs into a top program in the country, focusing on operating the program with a university-level mindset in training, competition, and approach to academics. Layten and his staff strive for academic and athletic excellence that will give CSM student-athletes the opportunity to take their training for success beyond to the 4-year level.

In his first cross country season as head coach, Layten coached the women's and men's programs to regional championship qualifying berths, and coaching Wailani Martin to All-Conference Honors at the Coast Conference Cross Country Championships. The women's team finished just outside the Top-10 at the Northern California Regional Championships, just outside team qualification for the CCCAA Championships. Layten coached Kristin Jacobs and Wailani Martin to CCCAA individual qualifying berths in 2016.

Before his arrival at College of San Mateo, Layten served as an assistant coach for the cross country and distance track team for three years at San Jose State University. There, he helped in the resurrection of the track program in San Jose, assisting the men’s distance program in becoming a top-15 team in the West Region for cross country and achieving the highest Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championship finish in school history on the men’s and women’s side. Layten helped the Spartans produce their first qualifiers for Division I NCAA’s (regionals), including Jennifer Beckingham in the 800m and 1500m. Layten also helped coach Craig Huff, who finished 5th at the United States Junior National Championships in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 2015.

He is a USATF Level 2 Certified Coach in the endurance events and USTFCCCA Certified Coach in the jumping events as well as strength and conditioning. Layten holds a Master’s degree in kinesiology at San Jose State, and a Bachelor’s degree in political science from California Polytechnic State University.
