Q: Can I take courses at mulitiple sites in the district (Canada College, Skyline College, College of San Mateo)?

A: Yes, many students take classes at more than one site during the same semester. It is imnportant to work with the counselors as there are differences between the colleges.

Q: Do I have to get an AA degree before I transfer to a four-year college?

A No, a two-year degree (AA/AS degree) is not required to transfer to a four-year college. However, we encourage a two-year degree prior to transferring. Many times once the courses for transfer are completed, only an additional 2 PE courses and a career or health sciences course are required.

Q: How many units are required to receive an AA/AS Degree?

A 60 units are required for the AA and AS degrees.

Q: How many units are required to be considered a full-time student?

A 12 units are required to be a full-time student.

Q: I have been put on a waitlist for a class. What does this mean?

A When a class is full, a student can be placed on a waitlist. As students are dropped from the class, the students on the waitlist are moved into the class and sent notification in the mail. Students on a waitlist should attend class the first session, regardless if they receive any add notification, to see if they can be added to the class. Students on the waitlist are given priority to add over students who just show up the first day.

Q: Can I access requirements for a specific transfer major online?

A Yes, major preparation sheets are available for all CSM majors. Go to www.assist.org..

Q: Does CSM offer courses that will transfer to the UC campuses?

A Yes, students can complete their lower division general education and major preparation coursework at CSM to transfer to a UC (University of California) campus.

Q: How do I find out about nursing or one of the other Allied Health Science Programs at CSM?

A You may attend a Nursing and Allied Health Orientation that is offered at various time throughout the semester. Call 650 574-6218 or email: csmnursing@smccd.edu for a current schedule.

Q: Where can I get help chosing a major?

A We have several options to help you decide on a college major: you can schedule an individual appointment with a counselor, you can enroll in a Career Development Class, or you can take one of the computerized career planning and major choice programs available through the Career Center.

Q: Do I have to declare a major?

AYou will need to declare a major and begin an educational plan when you apply and register for college. However, you may select a "General Studies" or "Liberal Arts" major if you do not know which specific field of study you would like to pursue. We recommend you take advantage of the Career Center, meet with a counselor, or enroll in a CRER class if you need assistance in establishing your educational goals.

Q: How do I calculate my GPA?

A A studen'ts grade point average (GPA) is computed by dividing the total number of grades points earned by the total number of units attempted. Grade symbols like CR, NC, W, I, IP, or X are not counted as units attempted in the calculation of GPA.

Q: What is the difference between the AA/AS degree and the BA/BS degree?

A The Associate Degree (AA/AS) degree is a two-year college degree offered a CSM and other community colleges. The Bachelor Degree (BA/BS) is a four-year degree offered at many colleges and universities. You may complete the first two-years of a four-year degree at CSM, but to complete the BA/BS you must transfer to a four-year college or university.

Q: How can I determine if a course will be accepted for an AA Degree or transfer?

AThe CSM College Catalog will tell you if each course counts toward an associate degree or transfer - (http://collegeofsanmateo.edu/webpages/default.asp?WebPgID=202&CatID=5). As a general rule at CSM, the course number will help you understand the course. - CSM courses numbered 200 and above are basic skills courses and are not applicable for an Associate Degree or transfer. - CSM courses numbered 1-199 are applicable to the Associate Degree. - CSM courses numbered 1-99 are applicable for transfer to many four-year colleges/universities and count toward the associate degree. Check each of these courses to determine where it is accepted for transfer.

Q: What is the difference between CSU GE and IGETC?

A Whether you follow the California State University General Education (CSU GE) or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) pattern of lower division GE requirements will depend on where you plan to transfer. Check with the school where you plan to transfer to see which pattern they accept and is best for your situation. See a CSM counselor regarding GE planning.

Q: Can I make an appointment to see a counselor, and where?

A Counseling appointments can be made by calling 650-378-7229 or in person by coming to the Counseling Department in Bldg.1, Room 209.. See Counseling for more information about meeting with a CSM counselor.

Q: Are counselors available in the evening?

AYes, counselors are available in the evenings for "walk-in" counseling sessions. The CSM Counseling Department is open Mondays-Thursdays 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Fridays 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Q: What is orientation and why should I attend?

Orientation gives students a chance to meet with advisors to develop collge goals and get a great start on their college program.
