Student Employment

Each semester the Reading & ESL Center evaluates its need for student tutors and student assistants. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units during the Spring and Fall semesters and can expect to work 5-12 hours a week.

Student Assistants
Student assistants are often the first to greet the Center's students and help them with check-in procedures. Consequently, Assistants must:

  • Possess strong people skills
  • Be friendly, enthusiastic, respectful, good listeners, and effective communicators
  • Be able to empathize with people of different ages, backgrounds, and abilities
  • Exercise good judgment in various situations

Student Tutors
Student tutors work with students on a drop-in or appointment basis to reinforce and supplement instruction and to enhance academic achievement.  Student tutors receive training in all the lab materials.  In order to be considered for this position, Student Tutors must:

  • Have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and be maintaining excellent academic progress in general
  • Successfully complete interviews with the instructional aides and lead faculty
  • Communicate effectively and empathize with people of different ages, backgrounds, and abilities
  • Be able to adjust to various personalities and learning styles and exercise good judgment in various situations
  • Be patient, respectful, flexible, and enthusiastic
  • Be good listeners and motivators
