Commencement Speaker Selectedcap and diploma
The Associated Students of CSM selected a CSM alum to serve as speaker for CSM's 86th commencement. Michael Collopy is a notable portrait photographer who has received international recognition for his portraits of public figures. Much of his work has focused on advocates of peace; his portfolio includes portraits of Pope John Paul II, Mikhail Gorbachev, Mother Teresa and Margaret Thatcher, among many others. In 1996, he released his book, "Works of Love are Works of Peace," a critically acclaimed 15-year photographic documentary; it was conducted with the cooperation of Mother Teresa and profiled the work of the Missionaries of Charity. In 2001, Collopy published his second book, "Architects of Peace," for which he photographed 75 of the world's most renowned peacemakers and asked each to write a personal statement on the issue of peace. "Architects of Peace" has evolved into a project that is dedicated to exploring the lives of people who have devoted themselves to building peace. The Architects of Peace project is a permanent exhibit at the National Civil Rights Museum at Marquette University, the Hoover Institute Archives at Stanford University, Anahuac University in Mexico City and Santa Clara University. Collopy attended CSM in the late 1970s and transferred to Saint Mary's College in Moraga, where he earned a bachelor's degree in design.

Commencement begins at 6:30 pm in the Gymnasium with a reception to follow in the courtyard of the Theatre.

Create! Celebrate @ CSM

The students of CSM displayed a wide array of creative talents at Create! Celebrate @ CSM this year. Hosted, organized, and supported in many ways by the students of Beta Xi Eta, CSM's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the event included exotic and energetic dance performances by Heidi Eggert's students, excerpts from "The War Years," a wonderful collaborative project involving interviews with World War II veterans by Michelle Brown's Broadcasting students, stellar Astronomy Day multimedia presentations by Diana Bennett's multimedia Internship students, and discussions of a wide range of design projects by Claudia Steenberg's graphics students. The awards for the spring 2008 Creative Writing Contest were announced, with the four first-place winners receiving scholarships to the Jack London Writing Conference, generously sponsored by the California Writers Club. Students from the Creative Writing classes of Bernard Gershenson, Roberta Reynolds, and Jean Mach read their own poetry and prose, and individual Phi Theta Kappa students displayed their original paintings and ceramic pieces, choreographed and performed a salsa dance number, designed the program and flyers, and graciously acted as master of ceremonies. The poise and talent of the students impressed all who attended. (View photos of the event)

Student Profile: Colin Jackson

Creative Student Finds His Way to CSM, Excels in Dance and Music
CSM student Colin Jackson (right) didn't follow the traditional path to college. He was home schooled by his parents, who would provide materials to their son and let him do his thing. "Yes, I have a little bit of discipline," Colin said with a laugh. Over the years, that helped him learn what he needed to pass the California's High School Proficiency Examination. Now 20 and carrying a 3.8 grade point average, Colin started CSM in the spring of 2006. He chose CSM because it was close by-he lives in San Carlos--and because of something which at first glance would not seem so important: CSM offered classes that used Macintosh computers.

Colin is majoring in digital audio and electronic music, taking classes with associate professors Sam Sanchez (multimedia) and Christine Bobrowski (music)."I'm really happy with my decision (to come to CSM)," he said. "I enjoy the campus; it's laid back. The professors are nice and the classes interesting." Colin mentioned one as an example, a multimedia class that allowed students hands-on experience recording bands. The 20-year-old student and KCSM student assistant ("I love it there. It's fun. All the people are great.") has creativity running through him. You might say it's in his genes--his father is a musician and mother is an artist.

Colin has been dancing since he was eight and still does, now focusing on hip hop but has taken classes in jazz, tap and ballet. He brought his skills to CSM, where he has performed at various venues on campus through CSM's dance program, including the Theatre. His other creative interest is music, which he said grew out of his enjoyment of dance. Someday, he hopes to enter the music industry recording or producing, although he feels that if he worked at it he could become an electronic dance-type music artist.

Over the last few semesters, his music has been part of CSM's Electronic Music Concert. This semester, his music video will be showcased. Spending "many, many hours" on the project, Colin has to remove all audio from a French film clip and replaced it with his own, including all sounds such as people running and music. Colin hopes to continue his education at a four-year someday somewhere close to home. In the meantime, however, he's happy to be where he is, using his Mac and creating music.

With the pending demise of Building 5, student artists will lose prominent display areas for exhibiting their work. However, Associate Professor of Art Jude Pittman, found a temporary solution for the near future. She was able to exhibit student artwork throughout the month of April at the La Di Da Café on Purisima Street in Half Moon Bay. According to Jude, "This is an informal student show which I organized with student help in an effort to display CSM student artwork until an art gallery is added to the CSM campus. Work in the show was made by students in oil painting, mosaic mural, watercolor, and the expressive figure drawing classes." (View photos of the exhibit)

In related news, CSM Coastside will offer two cross-linked art courses in fall 2008, Art 201/202, Form and Composition I and II, and in spring 2009, ART 231/232, Watercolor, will be offered. According to a Coastside survey, Watercolor was one of the top three classes that the Coastside community is interested in taking.

CSM Coastside's website has a new look with additional features and includes fall 2008 class offerings. It can be viewed at http://collegeofsanmateo.edu/coastside/

Alumni Stars Fred Radke
star Former CSM student Fred Radke (right) has had a distinguished musical career as professional trumpeter, big-band conductor, recording artist and music educator. He has been a member of the Harry James Orchestra as lead trumpet player and more recently, as its musical director. In 1994-95, Fred led a tribute to Harry James in a battle of the Big Bands on an International Tour. His style of trumpet playing is considered so similar to James that it is often difficult for listeners to discern between the two. His musical aspirations began during his teenage years, when he led the band of a steamship line during ocean crossings and also had opportunities to work with Marlene Dietrich, Burt Bacharach and Johnny Mathis. In early adulthood, Fred attended CSM to further his education. He has won two Telly Awards for his music direction for the movie Apollo 13 (2006) and for the Museum of Flight's Wings of Heroes (2005). Political Science Students Collect Books for Africa

A group of Erin Scholnick's political science students are participating in "Books for Africa," a nonprofit program which is the largest shipper of donated textbooks to the African continent. The main purpose of this charity is to collect books and send them to low-income children in Africa. The cost to send books is $19 per 50 pounds. In order to raise the money to send these books, a group of CSM students staffed a booth during Spring Fling held last week where they accepted donations and had a book drop-off area. The group that is working to make a difference for these lower income kids includes: John Austin, Brian Bianchi, Nick Aurelio, Kevin Hinsch, and Sean Wilson. This project is something that the students wholeheartedly believe in and they hope to make a difference in the lives of children who could benefit from their efforts. The last collection day will be on June 20. Anyone interested in donating books for a very worthy cause should contact Sean Wilson at srwilson@usfca.edu or 714-478-6277.

A Message from PR & Marketing

Another Call for Participation: CSM to be at 2008 San Mateo County Fair, A Great Promotional Opportunity
CSM returned to the San Mateo County Fair last summer to find a receptive community as we offered inviting and informative exhibits of our program and services with a dedicated core of 75 volunteers. All located in one large room, our exhibits featured our horticulture, engineering, art, math/science, cosmetology, music and community education programs, along with financial aid services. We also staffed a general marketing table. Hundreds of fair goers stopped by, leading to a number of new enrollments. Plenty of goodwill was garnered. This year, we'd like to follow-up that success with an even bigger showing, with multiple exhibits and multiple ways to showcase our college. We are asking you to mark your calendars and consider participating. We will be at the fair on the following dates: August 8-10 and 15-17. To programs, departments and services, we would like you to consider hosting an exhibit. To individuals, please consider volunteering to staff exhibits or perform other fair-related functions. As a thank you, volunteers will receive two free admission tickets for use on any day of the fair. Please click here for an exhibit description form. Also, an email will be sent soon with other specifics on how to participate. In the meantime, please contact Bev Madden at maddenb@smccd.edu or extension 6538.

Alex Guiriba (right) is CSM's program services coordinator/outreach specialist. Alex is the newest member of the PR & Marketing team, but is by no means a stranger to the campus--his journey has come full circle. As a graduate of CSM and UC Berkeley, Alex is happy to return to the place where his career in higher education began. As a student at UC Berkeley, he worked with underrepresented high school and community college students and prior to coming on board at CSM, he interned at the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and worked in the city's public elementary and high schools. As the outreach program services coordinator, Alex teams with CSM faculty, staff and students to meet the needs of local high schools and the community.

Public Relations & Marketing has moved to Building 9
On Friday, May 2, we moved from our offices in Building 1 to the lower level of Building 9. We're located on the television side of KCSM's operations (the right side as you walk into the building's main entrance). Our phone numbers and email addresses have remained the same. As we're settling in, we are attempting to stick to timelines on various projects. If you have a new project, visit our Web site at collegeofsanmateo.edu/csmpr to submit a request. Also, please come by our new locale to say hello.

"New-look" Fall Schedule distributed to community fall 2008 schedule
With direction from President's Cabinet, the interior of the schedule of classes took on a new look with our fall publication. Here are some of the highlights:
■ On the inside front cover is a welcoming message from Mike Claire, along with a listing of our District board.
■ Located on the facing page is the table of contents, enhanced by a course listings index.
■ The Application for Admission (page 7) and Board of Governors Fee Waiver Application (page 15) were moved from the middle of the schedule to allow for earlier access and to eliminate an interruption in the flow of the course listings. (As a side note, Admissions and Records reports that most applications are now completed online.)
■ The last interior page in the schedule features a multi-colored map that includes a legend designating, for example, construction zones, where disability parking is available and the location of the pay phone.

Distribution
The U.S. Postal Service mailed CSM's "new-look" Fall 2008 Schedule of Classes in the week of April 21 to more than 100,000 households in the College's service area, which includes: Belmont, Burlingame, El Granada, Foster City, Half Moon Bay, Hillsborough, Millbrae, Montara, Moss Beach and San Mateo. The fall schedule has already been distributed on campus as well. A printed version appears on CSM's Web site and a registration version is available through WebSMART. Also, copies are available at public libraries and recreational centers in San Mateo County, and public libraries in San Francisco.
