Three Sources of Exam Help
U.S. News and World Report hosts an international student blog. This week they offered tips on how international students can get help with exams. Those tips are: 1. Go to your teacher’s office hours; 2. Talk to senior students; 3. Ask the professor what is most important to know. Visit their blog for more details.

Hike of the Week
A personal favorite of the International Student Center staff is the Edgewood Park Trail in Redwood City. It is short 2 mile hike when you just need to get away and be among the trees and hills. Although there isn’t a whole lot of shade on the trail, it’s proximity makes for an easy way to reconnect with the nature on the Peninsula.

Monday, September 2, No School – Labor Day holiday
The school will be closed on Monday, September 2 and no classes will be held. On Monday the United States celebrates Labor Day. It is time for barbecues! The holiday is meant to celebrate American workers and their economic and social contributions. In current times, the holiday is a signal that summer vacations are over, that it is a time to go back to school, and to get ready for the fall holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the religious holidays in December).

Deal of the Day – Paws for Coffee
Sandwiches at Paws for Coffee on the 2nd floor of Building 10 are discounted during Fridays only.

Welcome to the start of a new semester!
It’s almost the first day of the semester (already!). We are looking forward to greeting all our new and returning students soon. For now, a few reminders:

  • If you are wait listed for a class, you may still attend the first class meeting. Show up early and sit in the front of the class. Make sure the teacher knows that you are interested in adding into the class. Also, introduce yourself as an international student. If you are unable to add the class and will then have less than 12 units, please come to the International Student Center immediately so we can help!
  • Also, if you are on a waiting list, print your schedule from WebSMART and bring it to class with you so that you can be prepared to show the professor your number on the waiting list.
  • Arrive early to the campus next week. There will be a lot of cars and traffic because of the many students who will be coming to campus as well as due to the construction at the back of the campus. If you’re driving, come at least 45 minutes early. If you’re taking a bus, try to catch an earlier than usual bus.

CSM Welcome Day, Friday, August 16
Success starts on the hill! Join us as we kick off the fall semester! English Language Practice Hangout
Thanks to all the new international students who participated in the English Language Practice Hangout. We had a terrific group which made it a lot of fun. Last week was our last meeting, but we hope that you continue to stay involved in future activities.

English Language Practice Hangout
International students are invited to our third English Language Practice Hangout. We will be starting at 2 pm on Thursday, August 8. We will meet at the International Student Center located in College Center Building 10, Room 310. Thanks to the participants of last week’s hangout we will have pizza for this meeting! Did you know that there is a popular American TV show about students attending a community college? We will watch two episodes and talk about the realism of the show and character stereotypes of international students.

New sections of ESL
The college has opened three new sections of ESL. So, if you are on a waiting list for any of these classes, please consider enrolling in one of the new sections:

94345 ESL 827 AE 5 units MWF 12:10 pm – 1:35 pm

Registering for Waitlisted Classes/Fees
Students are not charged tuition and fees for waitlisted classes. If you come off the waiting list and register for that class, then you have 24 hours to pay for the class. We advise you to pay for the class immediately so that you don’t have any problems in the future. However, if you do not pay within 24 hours of registering for the class then you will be dropped from the class. Please contact the International Student Center with any questions. For more information about the wait list process visit the CSM Wait List page.
