College of San Mateo students have the week off for spring break this week. We hope that you are having a rest filled break and recharging your batteries or catching up on some studying you may have missed. The office will be open all week except tomorrow, Wednesday, April 2, when the College Center (Building 10) will be closed all day due to construction.

Today, March 20th is the International Day of Happiness. I know you must be busy and anxious for your assignments and tests right now. As a student who is transferring this semester, I feel so nervous when waiting for decision(s) from schools right now as well. However, the good news is, ONLY 8 DAYS UNTIL SPRING BREAK!!!!!! So cheer up and be happy!

There are three things I usually do to make me happy when I’m at College of San Mateo. I hope they will help you somehow.

1. Go to the piano practice room and try to finish Chopin Minute Waltz in one minute (always fail).
2. 30 minutes of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) at the gym (aerobics really work!).
3. Argue with the crows that are walking by or are standing on the campus street lamps (I am not serious, and they always lose).

Wish you a happy day!

The International Student Center is bidding farewell to our Project Director Patty Kwok. Today is her last day at College of San Mateo as she transitions to a new school in San Francisco. She will be dearly missed!

Patty sent the following email to CSM students earlier this month:

Subject: Changes at the International Student Center

Dear CSM International Student,

All the best,

Reminder: No classes on Wednesday, March 5
Wednesday, March 5 is a Flex Day at CSM. Instructors and staff will be on-campus participating in workshops. But students have the day off from classes. Use your time wisely. Wednesday will be a great day to catch up on any homework or reading you might have missed.

Roommate bulletin board
Did you know that the International Student Center has a Roommate Board. If you’re looking for roommates or looking for a room to rent, come check out the board. There are two postings, one for a room in the Bay Terrace Apartments and another at the Hillsdale Gardens.

New International Student scholarship sponsor
The International Student Center is proud to announce our new “CORT Scholarship for International Students.” The scholarship is sponsored by CORT and available to international students who are currently studying at College of San Mateo. CORT provides furniture rental packages and housing information for students living off-campus. CORT offers furniture rental, with additional packages for cookware, towels and linens, a TV, and more. Badminton team looking for members
The badminton team at Skyline College is looking for players! It’s not too late to add the Badminton team to your class schedule and participate in some high flying, birdie smashing action. The Mammoth Cometh and its happening right here in our backyard. The NY Times Magazine story details the work of Ben Novak in UC Santa Cruz and the use of genetic engineering to save species from extinction as well as his work to resurrect extinct species. Called “de-extinction,” the idea of returning an extinct species like the Woolly Mammoth presents all kinds of ethical and environmental questions. Both positive and negative. Read the article to see what’s taking place in Santa Cruz, a short hour and half drive southwest of College of San Mateo.

Student Haoran Yu from China caught the Rockets vs. Warriors basketball game on Thursday, February 20. The Warriors not just won, but won in style, providing a thrilling finish when the Warriors tied the game in the last three seconds. They went on to win 102-99. You can find his pictures on our Flickr page.

Even if you’re stuck indoors studying, take a break to enjoy this beautiful weather. Yes, there is a drought in California so be sure to save on water when you’re at home, but let’s enjoy our golden winter! Here’s a website with a list of hikes near San Mateo. But this will be a great weekend to enjoy the coast. If you’ve only got a couple of hours, take Highway 92 west to Half Moon Bay. Once you get to Highway 1, turn left and drive for about 15 minutes until you spot the Ritz Carlton. There’s a beautiful beach area there to enjoy. Plus you can feel all fancy because you’re hanging out near the Ritz Carlton. If you’ve got more time, take the drive all the way down to Santa Cruz, then take Highway 17 back to 280 north.
