ProgramHorticulture
Employment opportunities are available in a number of fields,
including landscape contracting/consulting, landscape water management,
floriculture, interior plantscaping, nursery sales, pest control, and
aboriculture, within businesses, city and county parks, golf courses and
greenhouses. Resources provided by CSM’s Horticulture Department and Career
Services Center assist students in finding employment.
Undergraduate coursework at CSM provides excellent preparation for transfer to
four-year institutions. Many horticulture students have transferred from CSM to
San Francisco State University, California Polytechnic State University at San
Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) to continue their studies. A number of horticulture
courses at CSM articulate with courses at Cal Poly.
The Horticulture Program at CSM helps prepare students for examinations in the
following certificate or licensing programs:
- California Department of Pesticide Regulation’s Qualified Applicator
- California Certified Nurseryman Certificate
- California Landscape Contractor’s License
- PLANET Landscape Industry Certified Technicians
Floristry
Opportunities are wide ranging in the floral industry and include retail flower
shops, floral studios, free-lance, event planning and staging, home staging,
wholesaling, and indoor plant maintenance. Many of our students take floristry
for advancement of their current careers or for personal enrichment.
The Floristry Program at CSM helps prepare students and professionals for the following industry certification programs:
- California Certified Florist
- American Institute of Floral Design Accreditation
