Becoming a Dental Hygiene Student

To become a dental hygiene student at the College of San Mateo, the first step is to attend an informational meeting. These meetings are offered monthly through the Math and Science Division Office. At this meeting you will be given a list of prerequisites for the Dental Hygiene Program. In addition to the classes, if you are accepted into the Dental Hygiene Program, you will also need a current CPR card, proof of a negative TB test and proof of Hepatitis B injections or antibodies. Prior to receiving your dental hygiene license from the State, there will also be background check done by the State. You will be purchasing your own scrubs, lab coats and instruments along with books. Financial aid may be used for instruments as well as your books. The cost of the program is very reasonable in keeping with the Community College System in the State of California. Financial details will be covered at the informational meetings.

It is recommended the students complete their general education requirements, prior to beginning the dental hygiene program. The program is rigorous and there is not a lot of extra time for other classes. The general education requirements MUST be completed by Spring Semester of the second year. At that point, the student has to be ready to receive their AS Degree in order to sit for the National Board Examination, which is offered in April each year.

Each year the College will be accepting 25 dental hygiene students. Six alternates will also be chosen. Our new clinic will be state of the art with the newest technologies. An Associate of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from the College of San Mateo is something you will be proud to have and it will serve you well in your career!!
