JAWS, screen reader - DSKL 817 Assistive Computer Access

JAWS is a screen reading program developed by Freedom Scientific. JAWS = Job Access With Speech and is used to access the computer by people with visual impairments.

  • Basic keyboard commands
  • Navigating Windows elements
  • Accessing Microsoft Word
  • Accessing the Internet
  • Reading Tables

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Student will configure assistive technology to meet individual needs.
  • Student will use assistive technology to access course materials.
  • Student will demonstrate using assistive technology to access the Internet.
  • Student will demonstrate using assistive technology to access computer applications.

Requirements

  • 24 hours in lab for .5 unit (48 points)
  • Lab assignment completion - (52 points)
You must earn a minimum of 70 points (70%) to receive credit. You are encouraged to work on the computer outside of class in order to practice what you've learned in the lab. If you miss 3 times, you may be dropped. Before attending class again, you must schedule an appointment with Carolyn to discuss your continuing in the class.

Class materials will be provided.

Class Procedures:

  1. Instruction will be given during your scheduled class time. It is very important that you attend all classes. Please schedule your work hours and other appointments accordingly.
  2. If you are unable to attend class, you must call 574-6432 and leave a message. Please leave a message at any time of day.
  3. In order to become, proficient in using the computer, you should spend time outside of your class time practicing what you’ve learned in class. Computers are available during Open Lab hours. There are also computer in the Library.
Computers can be fun but also frustrating. Sometimes computers and printers have problems. Be patient and flexible with the computers and with your learning. Give yourself time to learn. Spend time practicing.

Open Lab Hours


The ATC lab is open for independent work in the afternoons, Monday through Thursday until 3:00. There are morning hours available so check the lab schedule.

The lab is open Friday mornings from 8:00 to 12:00.
