Bike Class

 

aquatics ADAPTED AQUATICS
ADAP 100
This class is designed to meet your fitness needs through a combination of both individual and group water exercises. You may choose to join in our group water exercises where you will work on strength and flexibility or you may choose to exercise independently on cardiovascular conditioning, walking ability, or general fitness. For those students who need additional help, we do have trained assistants. We also have a pool lift for those students who need help getting in and out of the water.

Men on bikes ADAPTED GENERAL CONDITIONING
ADAP 110
Adapted General conditioning is our core course in adapted PE. This is a great class for new students to enroll in as it is a general class that will introduce you to adapted PE. We start the class off with cardiovascular conditioning followed by a group stretch. We also have various types of other equipment including standing frames and arm cardiovascular training equipment. Our instructional aides and student assistants are well trained to help any student with their exercises.

 

Women doing weights ADAPTED WEIGHT TRAINING
ADAP 140
If one of your exercise objectives includes increasing your strength, then this is a good class for you to take. We have a state-of-the-art weight-training center at the College of San Mateo where we teach you how to adapt the equipment to your specific needs. Our assistants are there to help you use the equipment as well as making sure you lift using proper form, the key to success in any weight training program.

Stretching ADAPTED BACK CARE
ADAP 155
Our Back Care program is designed to teach you exercises to improve and maintain a healthy back. You will learn a series of stretches and spine stabilization exercises which will build strong and flexible trunk muscles. Students will learn how to achieve good posture and how to move safely without hurting their backs.

ADAPTED SPORTS
ADAP 680
Sports for students with and without disabilities. Sport modifications will be used to help integrate students with different physical abilities. Previous knowledge of adapted sports is not required. To increase competency, may be repeated for times.

 

Track WALK/STRIDE/RUN
(ADAPTED LIFELONG FITNESS)

This is a great class for students at all levels that are interested in improving their cardiovascular (aerobic) fitness. In this class we use the track, the stairs, the campus trails and surrounding areas to exercise. Each student is given an individualized walking and/or jogging program, depending on the fitness level of each student. This class is great for increasing aerobic capacity, reducing overall body fat, gaining lean body mass, improving walking/jogging speed and skill, and having fun.

 

Taking blood pressure ADAPTED EVALUATION
ADAP 875
This is where we find out how you are actually doing in the adapted PE program. In this class, we test your progress through monitoring your blood pressure and resting heart rate, testing how your heart responds to exercise, testing your flexibility, your flexibility, your strength, how well you’re walking, even your body composition and posture! We use this information to help you in meeting your fitness goals.

 

CPR/FIRST AID
PE 680
This class will teach the students adult, child, and infant CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and standard first aid. Often times people “freeze” in an emergency situation and they will not know what to do. In this class we practice emergency scenarios and help to provide the students with the confidence and the skills necessary to provide care to a victim as a “first responder.” This class is taught in compliance with the American Red Cross.

DANCING WITHOUT LIMITS
DANC 195
Dance for abled and disabled students. Music and dance are used to integrate people who are of varying physical abilities. Previous dance experience not required. Plus one lab hour by arrangement per week. Credit/No Credit grading.

 

SPINNING®
FITN 301
Spinning® is the original stationary cycling program. It is a sport specific, non-competitive, individually paced, group training system designed to promote total health; a balance of mind, body and inspirational well being. Spinning® is a heart rate specific, cardiovascular fitness training program coached by a Certified Spinning® Instructor on a specialized stationary bike called a Spinner®.

CROSS TRAINING BOOT CAMP
FITN 235
Three lab hours per week. Designed to incorporate various exercises including: dumb bell weights, calisthenics, whole body lifts, abdominal (core) movements, bicycle ergometer intervals, jump rope, speed drills, and flexibility exercises. Emphasizes multiple body aerobic and anaerobic exercises to produce cross training effect. (CSU)

TRACK AEROBICS
FITN 681
Designed to increase the student’s personal fitness through a comprehensive stretching, jogging and/or walking program. Instruction includes: proper stretching techniques, proper training, principles, correct walking/jogging
techniques and heart rate monitoring to assist student in developing a realistic cardiovascular program. Upon completion of the course the
student will be able to successfully design and implement a stretching and cardiovascular training program. (CSU)

 

WEIGHT CONDITIONING
FITN 205
Individualized weight conditioning for all levels of ability using specialized machines and free weights. Instruction on safety, form, technique, and muscle development. Increase muscle strength, tone, and endurance. Plus one lab hour by arrangement per week. Recommended Preparation: recent physical examination. To increase competency, may be taken four times. (CSU)
